This is what our students have to say...
“Curt’s instruction is clear and concise. He demonstrates painting techniques and shows other artists’ work to complement the ideas he presents to students. The staff’s guidance, the artists’ interactions, and the excellent studio space combine to make the painting experience a joy! My artistic skill and my enthusiasm for painting have improved because I am part of the artist community at Butler Studio.”Mary McCorkle
“Besides being an artist par excellent, Curt is also the consummate teacher. He meets his students at their level, is affirming and fun. I particularly like the class structure; a small group focusing on one topic per session gives us a depth of understanding so there is a great sense of accomplishment at the end. The space is warm, handsome & unique. It too contributes to the learning atmosphere. Thanks to Anne, classes are well organized.”Betty Hunter
“There is magic in Curt Butler’s teaching studio. I’ve just completed my first painting class in a series of five. It was essentially a class in enthusiasm and joy. In those first three intense hours, Curt conveyed the recipe for escalating inspiration, creativity, and imagination through the main lenses of what makes a great painting. While stepping us through the basic fundamentals of great paintings — color, shape, and value — Curt focused on chasing mood versus accuracy, and asked us to ask ourselves questions like: ”What excites me the most about this subject?” “What is the mood and how can I exaggerate it with color?” “What’s the most fun about this shape?” “How do my light-dark values make the design flow better?” “What would it look like if it went this way?” Answers are different for everyone, and can be a freeing playful ride for anyone. How magical is that? Curt encouraged us to move from our initial global emotional reaction to our chosen subject, through the angles of color, shape, and value, to a well informed, finely tuned excitement about our creative process. It is personal; it is unique to each student. He cares. It is a class in what makes an artist fly based on the fundamentals of creating great art. Oh yes!”Kat Turczyn
“As a rank beginner, I was apprehensive about starting one of the Foundation classes. However, Anne was great and the other students were completely understanding. I left with a better understanding of how to begin to paint, and after some practice and experimentation on my own, I plan to take more classes. I highly recommend these classes for both beginners and more experienced painters.”Dorothy Lodger
“What a super workshop. Probably the best I have ever taken. Hate to admit there were some basics I ‘d been overlooking that I didn’t realize. Thanks to Curt, many little learning moments were captured. I had lots of light bulbs click on – thank you, Curt. It is getting harder and harder to click on my light bulbs(ha)!!! Can’t wait to tackle so many new areas. New is sometimes very frustrating but Curt made it challenging and enjoyable.”Judy D.
“Curt did such a fantastic job of teaching, leading, and showing us how to be more expressive and successful in executing mood in our paintings. He was able to go to our paintings and capture the essence of each student’s individual style, with direction for each student (such a mark of a great teacher). I was amazed at his ability to capture each student’s style in such a short time. Curt hit all of our senses in his instruction: sound, sight, hearing, demonstration, and doing it ourselves. Superb teaching, Curt. The pace of giving us instruction and then our painting was so helpful and made for such an interesting workshop. I couldn’t wait to see each step of his method. But most of all, we had fun at the same time.”Pat Huff
