Though she took only one studio art course at Chapel Hill, the vibrancy, sensuality and tactile feel of oil paint left a deep impression on Mary. After a thirty-five-year business career in radio and television, she was finally able to reignite her passion. In 2008, she delved seriously into oil painting with Andy Braitman. In 2011, she completed Braitman Studio’s intensive Artist-in-Residence Internship.
Her past paintings have focused on atmospheric impressionism to provide a sense of peace and calm. While she still favors a more muted palette, she is currently working on pushing value, color and the excitement of mark-making through varied applications, additions, and subtractions of paint. Whatever approach a given painting may take, she always endeavors to let her love of color mixing shine through!
In addition to Andy Braitman and most recently Curt Butler, Mary has studied with Susan Matthews, Roger Dale Brown, Miriam Durkin, Don Andrews and the late Shelly Bechtel Sheperd.
She is currently a working artist and oil painting instructor at Braitman Studio in Charlotte and Butler Studio in Gastonia. She is also a poet whose work has been recognized by the Poetry Council of North Carolina and was published in the 2014 edition of the journal Kakalak.
