Our History

Butler Studio was created in 2006 by artist Curt Butler, with the intention of creating paintings for galleries and private collections. In 2008, Butler Studio relocated to historic downtown Gastonia, occupying 800 square feet in the Merit Building, which is owned by a local architect, Allison Pell. In 2010, Butler Studio opened an additional 500 square feet with the intention of teaching oil painting classes.

In 2014, Butler Studio continued to expand by adding a 2600 sq. ft. classroom in the adjacent building. As our facility and student base increased, we saw a need to grow our class selection and number of teachers. Currently, Butler Studio offers classes in basic, intermediate & advanced oil painting with eight different classes and four teachers.   In addition to our teaching facility, we have added a gallery called the Upstairs Gallery which serves as a faculty gallery and art supply store carrying paint, brushes, canvas, frames, mediums and more.

“Butler Studio has become more than just a studio to paint in; it has become a place of inspiration for our students and a beacon of culture in a downtown community.” –Curt Butler
